The Cherokees wanted the United States to accept them as social equals and to respect their independence as a sovereign nation. They wanted to be free from state and federal laws. The Cherokee leaders mentioned the Treaty of Hopewell (1785) which set the the borders between the United States and the Cherokee nation, gave the Cherokee nation the right to send a representative to Congress and to subject American settlers in Cherokee territory to Cherokee laws.
