The main reason why urbanization and poverty (at first) increased during the industrial revolution is because thousands of people moved from rural areas into the cities in order to be closer to the factories, in which they could find work. The limited availability of housing meant that people were forced into very small living arrangements and were often immersed in unsanitary conditions.
