In what ways does the silk road represent a bridge between east and west?

To start of with, Silk Road was an major trading route. It was about 7,000 miles long. The route started in China and ended by the Mediterranean. It acted like a bridge which got goods from one place to another. But since their were many bandits along the route it made traders hard to get goods from one place to another.
