The Habeas Corpus Act gave every prisoner the right to obtain a writ document ordering the prisoner be brought before the judge to specify the charges against the prisoner.  This Act was passed to safeguard individual liberty and prevent unlawful or arbitrary imprisonment.

Habeas Corpus is a document requiring that a  prisoner be brought before a court or judge so that his or her imprisonment will be determined as legal or illegal.
