In the electron transport chain component of cellular respiration, the reactions occur on the surface of the cristae. Since the cristae are confined within the volume of the mitochondrion, folding will allow more surface area than flat cristae.

Greater surface area for reactions to occur -> greater reaction rate -> more efficient cellular respiration.
