The nurse's best response would be to tell the birthing couple that the placenta is a health hazard. It may cause a lot of health problems to them, their family, and to their whole community as well. It is bloodstained and unsanitary especially when the placenta is found to have sustained abnormalities during pregnancy. However, this may vary from one hospital to another. It is best to check this the hospital's rules and regulations regarding the matter.
