How did the mountains of Greece affect the development of ancient Greek communities?

The Ancient Greece is full of mountains, which played a role in their development. Ancient Greece is actually composed of several states and cities, which often sit on the valleys between the mountains and dominates an area around it. Each state has its own  dialect and identity. Therefore, conflicts often occur between the states that contributed to their fragmented culture.
