Why do you flip the inequality sign when dividing by a negative number?

Assume x is 100.

-x<1
-100 is smaller than 1.

Dividing by -1,
x>-1
100 is greater than -1
If the inequality is not changed,
100<-1
100 is less than -1 which is not true
