Katrina hit the Gulf Coast of the United States in August 2005, a very active hurricane season. One prevention efforts that failed in the event of Katrina was the levees and flood walls that were built around the city. Storm surges and torrential rains caused the levees t be breached, revealing engineering errors in their design.
