World War II started in 1939 and ended in 1945, so it lasted for six years. It was fought between the Allied Powers and the Axis Powers as Japan was trying to dominate Asia and Germany was trying to dominate Europe. Japan and Germany were part of the axis powers, along with Italy, while the Allied powers consisted of the United Kingdom, France and the United States.
