It is common to refer to bronze sculptures as "work in bronze," but those who create them do not begin with bronze. With marble, for instance, the sculptor begins with a block of stone and works away at it from there. A bronze sculpture is not hammered into shape by hammering on a block of metal. Instead, bronze sculptures are usually made of clay before being cast.
