A function is when there is only one output to each input. For example:

X Y
----------
1 2
2 3
3 4

There is only one Y value that is meant for the one x value.

Functions are a key concept in algebra and very important to understand. A function basically describes a relationship and allows you to predict what will happen next. Most of the technology in our world today has been made possible because someone first used functions to make predictions.
