x + y = 10

x * y = 16

from 1st eqn, y = 10 - x

substituting in 2nd eqn

x * (10 - x) = 16

10x - x^2 = 16

x^2 - 10x + 16 = 0

(x - 8)(x - 2) = 0

x = 8 or x =2

y = 10 - 8 = 2 or 10 - 2 = 8

so the two numbers are 2 and 8
