Catherine the Great tried to expand Russia's territory and, as a former German princess, tried to modernize Russia. Russia was such a backwards nation at this time. They were soooo far behind in industrialization and were just lacking in literacy and learning. Catherine tried to bring Russia up to speed with the west.
