I think he would have 1/2 pieces because if you multiply the 2 numbers you get 3/6 which is equal to 1/2

18 because if he is ging to cut 1 yard into 1/6 all yu need to do is multiply the denominator (6)  by 3 to get 18   so 18 pieces
