Potential energy is stored energy, or the possibility to do work. Not kinetic energy, which is the actual movement and doing of the work. An example of potential energy would be ball positioned at the top of a steep hill. That ball would be said to have potential energy. When the ball rolls down, the potential energy is released as kinetic energy.
