Upper ocean
Heterotrophic bacteria and the photosynthetic cyanobac- terium Synechococcus are found almost everywhere in the upper ocean. In temperate waters, the annual cycle of their abundance may be quite regular. Generally, both groups are most abundant in summer and least so in winter.
