I need help understanding participle and gerund phrases. Could anyone please try to explain them to me?

I'm not sure how to explain it well, but the participle phrase will be like an adjective so it will be describing the noun in the sentence. A gerund phrase will usually end in "ing" and will act as the noun in a sentence.
