Why do you start with the greater number when adding on a number line

You should always start with the greater number because if you don't you will 1- get the wrong answer no matter how you d the math and 2- because thats the way it is done. Plus to be honest its easier. I hoped i answered you question at least some one and it wasn't a complete fail.
