How does belief in the flood of Genesis contradict a belief in uniformitarianism

In uniformitarianism, geologists believe fossils were formed over millions of years. Belief in the flood of Genesis is that fossils were formed by heavy water from the flood in about 40 days. These two views contradict each other in age & source.
