         -6x - 3y = -72

         -2x      =  -16

            x = 8

Substitute x = 8 into the 2nd equation

2(8) + y = 24

16 + y = 24

y = 8

Check:  Substitute the values into the 1st equation

4(8) + 3(8) = 32 + 24 = 56  So we have the correct values for x and y
