The Jim Crow laws were a “lawful” means of repressing the recently freed slaves. Segregation (separate schools, restaurants, motels, even drinking fountains were off limits for blacks.
In regards to voting black men were discriminated against by having to pass literacy tests, pay poll taxes etc.
