This amendment protects citizens from excessive bail and cruel and unusual punishment. This was in response to the Coercive Acts created by King George before the Revolutionary Era.
The 8th Amendment states that cruel and unusual punishment is not needed, and not fair to American citizens. Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed.
