I would say many Slave Spiritual music had themes of hope or freedom, often eluding to the idea of escape or a better life. They might also refrence stories from the Bible like David and Goliath (a very popular story among slaves) about defeating a larger enemy. The music itself was often slow, but rhythmic, which hints of traditional African music in it as well.
