y = -2x - 5

y = 4x + 1

This equation has one solution. y = -3 and x = -1.

y=−2x−5

substitute −2x − 5 for y in y = 4x + 1:

y = 4x + 1

−2x − 5 = 4x + 1

−2x − 5 + −4x = 4x + 1 + −4x

−6x − 5 = 1

−6x − 5 + 5 = 1 + 5

−6x = 6

(Divide both sides by -6)

x = −1

substitute −1 for x in y = −2x − 5

y = −2x − 5

y = (−2)(−1) − 5

y = −3
