Ulysses Grant won the presidency after Andrew Johnson in 1869 and was the 18th President of the United States of America. Grant did not feel represented by Johnson’s approach to reconstruction after the civil war so he ran for the presidency and won, among other reasons, due to his support to African Americans. During his presidency, Grant appointed African Americans to important federal offices and he also created the Department of Justice.
