Betty is 1⁄2 mile from school. Jerry walked 2⁄3 a mile to pick up Betty and then they walked to school together. How far did Jerry walk?

The solution is to simply find the sum of these two values, like such:

1/2 + 2/3 = 3/6 + 4/6 = 7/6 = 1 1/6

Jerry walked 1 1/6 of a mile.
