Why did merchants in constantinople have an advantage over merchants in other cities?

Because both sides of Constantinople were between the European settlements and the Asian settlements.  For merchants from the EAST, it was the Gateway to the European buyers, and for merchants from the West, it was the gateway to Asian markets.
