Composite volcanoes, stratovolcanoes, form from subduction boundaries.
In subduction zones, an oceanic plate subducts beneath a continental plate. A volcanic arc which is a series of volcanoes can form above the subduction zones where magma forms and rises from the friction of the plates rubbing against each other.
