I believe the miRNAs function in controlling gene expression by binding to the mRNAs and degrading them or blocking their translation. MicroRNAs are short non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression post transcriptionally. They bind to the 3'-UTR of their target mRNAs and repress protein production by destabilizing the mRNA and translational silencing.
