Excess Reactant: Reactants that are left over when the limiting reactant is gone
Limiting Reactant: Reactant that is used up first in the reaction.
Suppose that you have a recipe that makes 12 cupcakes, but you need 36 cupcakes. You will need to triple the ingredients for the recipe to get enough (or make the recipe three times).
The recipe for each set of 12 cupcakes calls for 2 eggs, 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of sugar, 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Suppose you only have 5 eggs but an excess(extra) of all the other ingredients. When you have used up all of you eggs, your "reaction" is over. No more cupcakes.
In this case, the eggs are the limiting reactant because it is the ingredient that runs out first. Six eggs are needed to make 36 cupcakes but only five eggs are available. The other ingredients are the excess reactants because there are plenty of other ingredients left over when the eggs run out.
Now, write you own limiting reactant example in paragraph form. You can use lots of different ideas: building a sandwich, making pizza, making smores, outfits, water molecules or come up with your own idea! Your writing (in paragraph form) should include
What your recipe is making, how many it makes and how many you are trying to make in total.
What is included in the recipe.
Which piece of the recipe "runs out first" (limiting reactant) and why (ex: we only have 5 eggs but need 6eggs to make 36 cupcakes). Identify the excess reactants in your example and why they are excess.
